Pregnant and weight lifting: local experts weigh in | Families
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Staying fit during pregnancy--it's a hot topic thanks to a California mom-to-be.
In a Facebook picture recently gone viral on the internet, she's lifting weights, eight months pregnant with two weeks to her due date. The image sparked outrage on the Internet. Some Facebook users are even asking her to "think of the children!"
Richard Rigor runs Crossfit Birmingham and he says it's a sight he's seen plenty of times.
"It's very common. A lot more than they think," commented Rigor.
Dr. Vineeta Estes from St. Vincent's Hospital says most of her patients don't slow down when they become pregnant.
"I've had patients who run on their due date," Dr. Estes added. Pregnant women, who already had workout regimen, usually get the green light from their doctors to keep it going.
"With a few precautions most women are able to exercise until their third trimester," Dr. Estes explained.
Even if it's a high intensity workout like Crossfit which involves a mix of weight lifting, body weight lifting, running and rowing.
"So they can continue to do Crossfit, but it is probably recommended that they do some modifications to maintain their safety," said Dr. Estes.
Rigor says he does like to scale things back once a woman passes the first trimester.
"Just really watch their form. Balance issues may come up," Rigor added.
Dr. Estes encourages her pregnant patients to continue their exercise routine.
"People who exercise have healthier pregnancy, better deliveries and better recoveries," says Dr. Estes.
Dr. Estes says the bottom line is that pregnant woman who do chose to exercise, should still stick to maintaining fitness. It's and it's not the time for beating personal records and pushing limits.
