Damage reports roll in as storms pass through central Alabama | News
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- We've seen some strong storms pass through the FOX6 viewing area tonight and we are already hearing about several damage reports, mainly from downed trees.
The main threats from these storms were gusty winds, heavy rain, and lightning. Several counties experienced strong storms including Tuscaloosa, Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Marion, Winston, Lamar, Walker, Pickens, Jefferson, Shelby, Talladega and St. Clair.
There have been multiple reports of trees down across our viewing area, with confirmed reports in Bessemer, Chelsea, Hueytown and Birmingham. Power poles, trees and lines are reported down in Midfield and there are trees down on homes on 9th and 4th avenues in Pleasant Grove.
We have also seen reports from viewers in Winfield, Hueytown, and Republic.
Alabama Power reports that 128,000 customers are without power as of 9 p.m. and the majority of those are in Birmingham. Jasper has 5,600 customers without power.
The storms will continue to slide southeast through the evening.
We're not expecting a tornado threat with this setup. The Storm Prediction Center is keeping the tornado risk for West Alabama at less than two percent.
Looks like we'll have another round of storms coming up Tuesday before the cold front blasts through the area. Expect much drier air behind the front with rain chances disappearing for a few days.
