BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Thousands of students around the nation and world gathered around flag poles on campus to pray before the ring of the first bell.
Today is the 22nd annual See You at the Pole Day, a day of prayer led by the student organization First Priority. At each yearly SYATP event, students meet together early in the morning before school starts to pray for their friends, classmates, teachers, families, nation and the world.
The theme for this year's SYATP is "Awaken," from the passage Ephesians 3:14-21 in the Bible.
"Paul's prayer in this passage is for his friends to awaken to the endless possibilities of what only God can do," First Priority Greater Birmingham Executive Director Matt Wilson said in a release.
"Paul cries for awakening. This year at See You at the Pole, pray for an unusual outpouring of the Spirit of God to awaken the hearts of students on campuses throughout your community and the world," Wilson said.
