Be Safe out there. It is a dangerous night so be carefully. I would not want to lose any friends this night. So watch out for each other.
Comparison of High School Construction for last quarterTop 10 posts of 2012
Happy New Year Helena! To celebrate we are bringing back the top 10 post of 2012 based on the number of local readers for that day:
#10 Great Flood (July): After a major rain storm, the city experiences a flood that wipes away the beach and some of the Amphitheater playgrounds.
#9 Papa Saias Opens: The mill beside the waterfalls has always been a special place and Helena and when Incahoots closed then there was a void in Old Town. The City was excited when a successful well know Alabaster business chose to move into it.
#8 Pharmacy Robbery: Helena Hometown Pharmacy (which later closed) was robbed in the middle of the day during the elections. The entire city was up and in arms. Finally two weeks later the Helena police, with help from Hoover, was to capture and arrest the thieves.
#7 Helena Stats and Facts (Sept) I am really surprised this made the top ten but I posted a very dry list of all the facts about Helena from population breakdown, Career field, race, religion, income of residents and the altitude. I think it ranked so high is because it is picked up a lot of search engines.
#6 Eureka Daffodil Bulbs(Jan): Everyone responded with Ken Penhale shared that the bulldozing at Eureka would destroyed the 100 year old Daffodil fields that was planted by the families of the miners. We recover 75+ bulbs and then gave them out free from my front yard but the big help was when several Helena families showed up on a Saturday to recover as many as they could carry. I planted mine in my front yard and Old town so that the Helena heritage bulbs would not disappear. Link
#5 Sex Offender in Helena( Sept): an individual who was registered as a sex offender moved into the area and people became very upset to discover the law did not prevent them from being within a certain distance of a day care. LINK
#4 High School Ground Breaking: The excitement grew when there news that the High School had its groundbreaking.
#3 Traffic Fatalities (April): Hwy 52 west is shutdown after a horrific accident that leaves Carl Glenn Allen. (Link) It was the 2nd accident in the area (the first being a boat hitting a school bus). (Link)
#2 Mayor Runoff (Oct): Sonny Penhale, who was the longest serving Mayor in Alabama history, lost to his former Police Chief Mark Hall. The Results were Hall 2,087 to Sonny 1,234. It was a huge change in Helena's political landscape.
#1 Helena Council Elections(Aug): With a mind-blowing 6,506 local readers, the Helena Election wins the top Helena news of 2012. Only two of the incumbents returned to the City Council and the Mayor's race went to a runoff. There was a record turnout at the polls and on top of that the Census changed the form of Government.
Dogs
Lots of lost dogs this week. Above is Laura's from the Royal Pines/Dunham Farm/Sunnybrook area) and he is missing his collar.
Next is a Yorkie: Missing in Helena near Chestnut Forest. This Yorkie named Sam went missing at 6pm last night. His buddy ( a long haired daschund) was found hit by a car on CR 93". Please help find Sam. Cindi 205-516-7645
