BLOG: Severe storms "likely" Wednesday morning | News
Title (Max 100 Characters)
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The following is excerpts of a post Monday morning on the FOX6 Weather blog from FOX6 Chief Meteorologist J-P Dice:
If you've watched Fox 6 News lately, you know we've been discussing
the possibility of severe storms Wednesday for some time now. It looks
like stormy weather is still likely during the early morning hours.
This is a rather potent system with lots of upper-level support for
severe storms. Ahead of the system, we're looking a good stream of
moisture and warm air.
For example, temperatures this afternoon will reach the mid 60s and by
tomorrow we'll see highs in the lower 70s. I expect dewpoint
temperatures to reach the lower 60s Tuesday night helping set the stage
for a rather vigorous weather event.
Here are the details I have now based on the forecast model data.
Timing: Expect a line of severe storms to move out
of Mississippi and into Alabama around 3am Wednesday morning. The
storms should be crossing I-65 between 7-9am and exiting the state by
11am. Since this will begin as an overnight event, please make sure
your weather radio is working or you have some other reliable method of
receiving warnings.
Severe threat: The main threat with these storms is
damaging winds. The environment is favoring a line of storms with a
small threat for isolated tornadoes both within the line and ahead of
the line. Just because we're not expecting a tornado outbreak it does
not mean to take this system lightly. In many cases, severe
thunderstorm winds result in more damage than small tornadoes.
Location: It appears just like in many of these
events - the greatest threat will be Birmingham westward. The storm
system should lose some of its punch east of I-65.
