Victim's attorney: Ex-Shelby Co. DHR worker threatened to take client's children | News
SHELBY COUNTY, AL (WBRC)- Last week, a former Shelby County DHR employee and former Birmingham Police officer was charged in connection to a sex crimes investigation.
Now, the attorney for the victim in the case is speaking out for his client.
Brandon Howard Daniel, a 29-year-old man from Pelham, is charged with indecent exposure, soliciting for purpose of influencing official action, harassment and theft of property.
The investigation began after an adult female client of Shelby County DHR filed a complaint stating "her DHR case worker had inappropriate sexual contact with her during a home visit," Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney said.
Chief Rigney said it allegedly happened Wednesday, Aug. 21 at a home within Alabaster city limits.
Attorney Courtney French represents the client, a Hispanic woman who speaks limited English.
"She made a report regarding one of her children, who she suspected was being abused and neglected," French said.
According to French, his client met Daniel during the DHR investigation into the abuse of her child. She told her lawyer that Daniel threatened to take her kids.
"In return for him not taking the children, [Daniel] asked for sexual favors," French said. "He came one day, showed up unannounced and DHR, they have that authority. Unlike any other state agency they can walk in your home, show their badge and remove your children from your home."
DHR Public Information Manager Barry Spear released this statement about the case:
"Mr. Daniel was dismissed and is no longer employed by the Department. DHR conducts criminal history background checks on all employees who work directly with families. When there are allegations concerning the misconduct of one of our employees, we conduct an investigation and take appropriate actions."
Daniel has bonded out of jail and he has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 25. FOX6 News hopes to pass along a statement from him when we are able to reach him.
