Pelham sidewalk plans moving forward | News
PELHAM, AL (WBRC)- It's been two years since Hayden Lee's son Tyler, 14 years old at the time, was struck by a car while walking along Bearden Road.
Tyler had a skull fracture and a chipped vertebrae.
"I, as his mother still have vivid memories," Lee said. "He was in the hospital for eight days in ICU, rehab and recovery for months and months at home."
Since the accident, the community has been urging the city to make the busy, narrow road safer for pedestrians. Now, something is finally happening.
ALDOT is planning to construct a sidewalk along a mile and a half stretch of Bearden Road. It will go from Pelham High School down to U.S. 31.
At a meeting Tuesday night, people got a bird's eye view of the upgrades.
"With all the people walking down there day and night, we need a sidewalk. We already had Tyler hit, there's been close calls. There's kids there all the time. This will be really nice," Pelham resident David Ladewig said
This project's price tag is a little more than $1 million. ALDOT is paying for 80 percent and the city pays the rest. Mayor Gary Waters says the cost is not a concern of his.
"If you safeguard one life in a project like this, it's well worth it. It's not just for kids that walk to school, it's going to be for football games, the cross country track team that runs off campus quite frequently," Mayor Waters said.
Lee is thankful her son has recovered and is here today. A simple sidewalk will "make us feel better, not have to worry about it ever happening to anyone else," she said.
This project has been in the works for a while. It was started under Mayor Don Murphy's leadership and current Mayor Gary Waters says he's continuing it, to make sure it happens.
Mayor Waters says the construction on the sidewalk will start in the summer of next year.
