Shelby County Community Education will offer two classes during the months of February and March to help adults in Shelby County learn the skills of welding and collision repair and automotive refinishing.  The classes will be taught at the School of Technology in Columbiana by certified instructors Lynn Miller and Mark McCary.  Students participating in both classes must be 18 years of age or older.  The deadline to register is February 1.

Welding classes will meet on Tuesday and Thursday, February 7 through March 29.  Classes will be offered from 3:30-5:30 p.m. or from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  Students may choose to learn Oxy fuel cutting and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW or stick welding) or Oxy fuel cutting and Gas Metal Arc Welding (Mig or wire welding).

Gloves, regulation safety classes, long sleeve shirt or jacket, and leather boots will also be required in order to attend the class.   The cost for the class is $280.00, plus a $100.00 supply fee.  Please make $280.00 class fee payable to Community Education and the $100.00 supply fee payable to Lynn Miller.

Collision repair and automotive refinishing classes will be offered Tuesday and Thursday, February 9 through March 29.  Classes will be offered from 3:30-5:30 p.m. or from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  The cost is $280 per person and a minimum of eight people are needed to make the  class.

Students are encouraged to provide a project vehicle that needs to be repainted in order to practice their skills.  Students who will not be able to supply a project vehicle will be paired up with another student.  A materials list will be given out on the first day of class and students will be responsible for the cost of the materials.

Participants will start by learning the basics of collision repair and automotive refinishing and will continue to  learn more advanced, hands-on methods as the training progresses. Class will include metal straightening, body filler, priming and blocking, painting, and color sanding and buffing (detailing).
